Turbo Charge Your Wordpress Dashboard!

google gears This small tip is for “people who are not aware of Turbo feature in wordpress dashboard” only.
Turbo is a feature that lets you to store your entire wordpress dashboard aka the admin panel’s CSS/PHP and other core files locally on your computer, which enables faster navigation inside your wordpress dashboard. All this is done by using Google Gears. And (un)fortunately, Google Gears is only available for Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari. Just keep in mind that Turbo is available only from Wordpress 2.5 or so.
No doubt, this feature is a boon for people who are on a dialup connection or other slower connections. But it does take a while to install gears and download required files for the Turbo feature. But in my opinion, its good to wait few minutes instead waiting every time you want to do something.

In order to do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click on “Turbo” link on the top right corner of the screen.
  2. Clicking on that link will popup a small window like page at center of your screen which tells you to install Google Gears first if you haven’t installed it earlier.
  3. If you haven’t installed follow the instructions and download the Google Gears and it will install automatically.
  4. After the installation it will prompt you to restart your browser, do it.
  5. Then login to the Dashboard and once again click on the “Turbo” link, this time it will tell you that the Google Gears has been installed and do you want to download files required for the Turbo feature. Go ahead and download the files.
  6. It will take few minutes and users on slow connection will have wait still more…
  7. After it completes updating all the files, you are done.

Now you can enjoy the blazing fast dashboard.
